There are 3 types of files used in myTaxExpress. They are all related to personal tax returns, but for different purposes.

From 2022, the folder used to store tax return files is slightly different on Windows. For example,  the folder for myTaxExpress 2022 Netfile by default is: - \\User\[username]\AppData\Local\mytaxexpress_2022n\data

  • The most important are .rxx files, the tax return file opened/saved by myTaxExpress. From .rxx file, you can create the other 2 types of files. The xx represents the tax year the return file is made for; e.g. .r12 is for 2012, and .r09 is for 2009.
Tax return files are by default located under the user's document folder, e.g.
    \\Documents\mytaxexpress\2012\data
    \\Documents\mytaxexpress\2013\data
    \\Documents\mytaxexpress\2014\data
    ...

  • .tax file, is the netfile which CRA needs from you.  .tax file only has a subset of information you entered into myTaxExpress return file.
.tax files (.xml file for EFile) are NOT stored any more since tax year 2017.

  • .pdf file, is the printable tax return file. .pdf file is opened by adobe acrobat reader or foxit reader. You can choose to print some or all pages from the .pdf files. PDF files are, by default, generated in the same folder as tax return files.
